Expectant parents living upstairs in this San Rafael duplex wanted to refresh and update the unused lower level so they could welcome renters into a comfortable, modern home.
The remodel centered around the kitchen, where we reworked the layout to create a more functional and inviting space. We replaced the window on the sink wall, repositioning the sink beneath it for better light and symmetry, and added another window above the dining nook to brighten the room. Modern conveniences like a dishwasher and garbage disposal were installed to bring the kitchen up to today’s standards. To open up the space, we removed the existing soffit and rerouted the hood vent ducting, allowing for a higher ceiling line. The kitchen also received updated lighting for a brighter, more welcoming atmosphere.
New flooring was installed in the kitchen and laundry room using red oak top-nail boards, which were then refinished along with the existing floors to create a seamless match throughout the unit. We also built shelving beside the sink and countertop area, and designed a custom built-in enclosure for the stacked washer and dryer. In the laundry room, exposed wires, conduits, and plumbing pipes were carefully rerouted and concealed behind new walls, giving the space a clean, finished look. Updated lighting was also added here and in the living room to modernize the entire unit.
To complete the transformation, we repainted the entire lower unit, giving the space a fresh, cohesive finish.
